This is my note about Honjimai and Nakajimai, a procedure of tea ceremony.

What’s Honjimai?

Place a tea bowl and a tea container right in front of Mizusahi (a water pitcher)

We do this throughout the year.

  • Sho-gen/a small room(less than a four and a half mat room)
  • Sotozumi for Ro (furnace)( you sit in the direction of the outer corner of furnace edge)
  • For Nagaita・Daisu・Kasane-teabowls・Kijindate・Nakaoki

What’s Nakajimai?

Place a tea bowl and a tea container right in front of yourself when you are making a tea.

  • Hiroma /a hall (more than a four and a half mat room)
  • Uchizumi for Ro (furnace)( you sit in the direction of the inner corner of furnace edge)
  • For Tana・Hirademae・Hongatte

We often get confused at which one is the one to do.

*When placing a tea bowl and a tea container for Honjimai and Nakajimai, a tea bowl is on the left and a tea container is on the right.
