In Japan, it’s very common that museums have their own house for a tea ceremony. It is usually available for museum visitors who are looking for a cafe after their stroll in the gallery and some in those museums make the facilities available to others for a certain cost.
Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is one of them. Their tea house “DOJI-EN” is named after the area, the surrounding land of the tea house used to be called DOJI-YAMA (Doji hills). DOJI-EN was also designed by the museum designer, Yoshio Taniguchi.
Visit and experience a tea ceremony at DOJI-EN
DOJI-EN has 2 tea houses, one is “IPPOTEI” which has a spacious tatami-room called Hiroma and the other is “HOUSYŌ-AN” with a very small tatami room for a formal tea gathering. “IPPOTEI” is open from 11:00-16:00 every day. You can have nice local matcha and a sweet at only 350 JPY.
Other than just enjoying their prepared matcha and sweet as a visitor, you can also rent the houses and hold your own tea gathering here at a very reasonable price. With close friends who love tea, it may become an unforgettable special experience.
